Unite seeks legal advice over behaviour of London
Underground bosses
2 November 2009
Unite the union have today (Monday) warned London Underground
(LUL) that it is seeking legal advice over the Tube operator's
divisive and possibly discriminatory decision to pay non-union
members an increase in salary which will not be made available to
union members.
Unite and the other tube unions have been attempting to solve
the issue of pay since February, and now LUL have decided to
implement its final offer – but only for non-union members. Unite
is currently balloting its members for strike action.
The strike ballot arises from LUL’s refusal to move on its pay
offer for 2009 since July. Unite says that London Underground's
‘final’ two year offer of 1.5 per cent in the first year and RPI
plus 0.5 per cent in the second year does nothing to help Unite
members to meet the real rises in the cost of living, which are not
reflected by the current distorted inflation figures.
Unite Regional Official, John Morgan-Evans said:
“We are seeking legal advice on this unpractical, divisive and
possibly illegal action. We have asked the company to think again
and return to the negotiating table.
“London Underground's approach will do nothing to resolve this
situation and will only fan the flames of this dispute."
