Campaign to value public services

Unite is a significant player in the public sector with more than 250,000 members employed in health, education, local and central government and the Royal Mail.

Every public service sector is pursuing campaigns specific to its own membership but there are a number of common themes across the public services sector on which Unite is campaigning.

Values - public services

Unite also has an international dimension to our work and are active members of the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) and Public Services International (PSI). Unite is supporting the ETUC petition for high quality public services, accessible to all.

Current priorities include campaigning for fair public sector pay settlements and procurement in public services as a lever for equitable employment standards, environmental considerations, equality of opportunity and commitment to skill development. Unite remains opposed to the privatisation and fragmentation of public services and will campaign to keep public services public and accountable.

Assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail: "Unite is already hugely influential within the public sector. Our diversity of interests and membership across the different public service sectors places us at the centre of public service reform. Building solidarity with other unions and wider supportive bodies will strengthen that influence even further."
